Karachi Board vs Hyderabad Board: Key Differences Students Should Know

If you study in Sindh, you have probably heard people say “Karachi board” or “Hyderabad board” as if each were one thing. In reality, Karachi is served by two separate boards — one for matric and one for intermediate — while Hyderabad is served by a single board that handles both. Knowing which board actually holds your exams matters for registration, admit cards, results, certificates, and college admissions. This guide lays out the key differences so you never mix them up.

Key points

  • Karachi = two boards: the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) conducts classes 9–10 exams; the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) conducts classes 11–12 exams.
  • Hyderabad = one board: the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Hyderabad (BISE Hyderabad) conducts exams for classes 9–12 in its districts.
  • Official websites: bsek.edu.pk, biek.edu.pk, and biseh.edu.pk. Use only these — BIEK has warned students against fake lookalike websites.
  • Class 11 admissions in government colleges go through the same online system (SECCAP) for students of both boards.
  • Both boards’ SSC and HSC certificates are government-issued and recognised for university admissions and jobs across Pakistan.

The biggest difference: one board or two?

This is the difference students get wrong most often.

In Karachi, secondary and intermediate education are split:

  • BSEK — Board of Secondary Education Karachi handles the Secondary School Certificate (SSC), i.e. classes 9 and 10.
  • BIEK — Board of Intermediate Education Karachi handles the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC), i.e. classes 11 and 12. BIEK describes itself as one of the biggest boards of Sindh.

In Hyderabad, there is no split:

  • BISE Hyderabad — Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Hyderabad handles both SSC (classes 9–10) and HSC (classes 11–12) in its jurisdiction.

Practical effect: a Karachi student registers with BSEK for 9th/10th and then gets a fresh enrolment with BIEK when entering college. A Hyderabad student deals with one board — BISE Hyderabad — through school and college. Your certificates are issued by the board that held your exam: a Karachi student’s SSC certificate comes from BSEK and the HSC certificate from BIEK; a Hyderabad student’s certificates come from BISE Hyderabad.

Which districts does each board cover?

Your board is decided by where your school or college is located, not by where you were born or where you live.

BoardJurisdiction
BSEK / BIEK (Karachi)Karachi Division — 7 districts: Karachi Central, Karachi East, Karachi South, Karachi West, Malir, Korangi, and Keamari
BISE HyderabadHyderabad Division districts: Hyderabad, Jamshoro, Matiari, Dadu, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Badin, Thatta, and Sujawal (some published district lists also include Shaheed Benazirabad)

If your institution is in any of the seven Karachi districts, you appear under the Karachi boards. If it is in the Hyderabad division districts listed above, you appear under BISE Hyderabad. Students in Sukkur, Larkana, and Mirpurkhas divisions fall under their own boards — not the Karachi or Hyderabad boards.

Both boards conduct annual examinations once a year and supplementary exams for students who fail or want to improve. Roll number slips, date sheets, and gazettes are published on each board’s own website — which is why bookmarking the right one matters.

Official websites — and how to avoid fake board sites

  • BSEK: www.bsek.edu.pk
  • BIEK: www.biek.edu.pk
  • BISE Hyderabad: www.biseh.edu.pk

Important: BIEK has issued an official warning against fake websites impersonating its portal. These lookalike sites can spread wrong date sheets and results, steal personal data, or ask for payments. The board states that biek.edu.pk is its only legitimate source — always check the exact URL (.edu.pk, not lookalikes) and an HTTPS connection before entering your roll number or personal details. The same caution applies to the other two boards: if a site asks for fees for “result verification” or “fast registration,” treat it as suspicious and confirm with the board office.

Results: how to check yours

Each board publishes results on its own official website, usually also as a downloadable gazette PDF.

  • BSEK (Karachi, matric): check on bsek.edu.pk; the board also runs an SMS service — send BSEK <your roll number> to 8583.
  • BIEK (Karachi, inter): check on biek.edu.pk.
  • BISE Hyderabad: check on biseh.edu.pk; the board also publishes a gazette. (Some education websites say results can also be fetched by SMS to 8583 — this is from secondary sources, so confirm it on biseh.edu.pk before relying on it.)

Result dates differ every year and are announced close to the exams, so ignore social-media date claims and watch the official sites.

Paper pattern and syllabus

Both boards follow the Sindh Textbook Board (STBB) curriculum — the same books. The annual exam structure is also broadly the same across Sindh’s boards: MCQs, short questions, and long questions, with section-wise marks set in the board’s official model paper.

That said, model papers are board-specific. Always prepare from the model paper your own board publishes — do not assume a pattern from one board applies to another. Read our guide to the Sindh board paper pattern for 9th class matric exams for the general structure, then confirm the details on bsek.edu.pk, biek.edu.pk, or biseh.edu.pk.

After matric: college admissions (SECCAP)

Here is a similarity worth knowing: whichever board you studied under, admission to government colleges for Class 11 runs through the same online system — SECCAP (Sindh Electronic Centralized College Admission Programme), run by the College Education Department on the official portal seccap.dgcs.gos.pk. You apply once online, rank your college choices, and seats are allotted on merit. Private colleges run their own admissions outside SECCAP. (Caution: sites like seccap.com.pk or seccap.org.pk are private — the official portal is the .gos.pk one.)

Which board is mine? Quick checklist

  1. Find the district where your school or college is located (not your home address).
  2. In Karachi’s 7 districts → BSEK (classes 9–10) and BIEK (classes 11–12).
  3. In Hyderabad division districts → BISE Hyderabad (classes 9–12).
  4. Still unsure? Ask your school/college office — your enrolment is registered with the correct board already — or check the affiliation list on the relevant board’s website.

FAQs

  • Can a student of one board transfer to the other?
Yes, in principle, but transfers between boards (for example, moving from a Hyderabad school to a Karachi school) require a migration certificate and follow the receiving board’s rules. Start the process through your school/college office and confirm requirements with the board — do not rely on agents.
  • Is one board easier or harder than the other?
There is no official difference in standard. Both follow the STBB curriculum and comparable exam structures. Claims that one board “gives more marks” are rumours, not facts — and acting on rumours (like switching schools purely for a perceived easy board) is a poor basis for a decision.
  • Do universities and employers treat both boards’ certificates the same?
Yes. BSEK, BIEK, and BISE Hyderabad are all government examination boards of Sindh, and their SSC/HSC certificates are accepted for admissions and employment across Pakistan.
  • Can I get my certificate verified online?
Each board provides its own verification services through its official website or office. Fees and procedure change, so check the board’s site directly rather than paying a third party.
