UCL PhD Studentships 2027: Eligibility, Funding and Application Steps

Intro

University College London (UCL) is offering around 50 fully funded PhD studentships starting 1 October 2027 through the UCL EPSRC Doctoral Landscape Award, known as UELA. This guide covers what UELA actually funds, who can apply, the deadlines that matter, and how to apply — with one important warning up front: the project catalogue and application portal do not open until 26 October 2026. Do not try to apply through an old portal link before then, and do not confuse UELA with other UCL PhD studentships that have different deadlines.

UELA covers Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences (the EPSRC remit). If your field is outside that remit, UELA is not the right scheme — look for a different UCL funding route instead.

Key points

  • ~50 fully funded, 4-year studentships; start 1 October 2027.
  • Funding: 4 years of fees at the Home rate + stipend estimated at £26,022 for 2027/28 + Research Training Support Grant.
  • International students CAN apply, but places are capped at 30% — maximum 15 international recruits. Competition for those places is particularly strong.
  • Project catalogue + application portal: expected to open 26 October 2026.
  • Application deadline: 8 January 2027, noon UK time. UCL strongly encourages submitting everything — including references — by 16 December 2026, because UCL is closed over Christmas with no email support.
  • Part-time study is available at 50%, 60% or 80% FTE — but not for international students.
  • UELA only: its deadline is not “the UCL deadline”. Other UCL studentships have their own dates.

What the funding covers — and what it does not

Covered:

  • Tuition fees for 4 years at the Home rate. International students receive a UCL award covering the difference between Home and international fee rates, where applicable.
  • Maintenance stipend at the UELA enhanced rate: £26,022 estimated for 2027/28. Do not quote £24,522 alone — that is the UKRI base before the £1,500 UELA enhancement.
  • Research Training Support Grant (RTSG) for extra project costs such as conferences, workshops, training courses and additional project costs. UCL does not state a fixed RTSG amount on the UELA page — do not invent one.
  • Part-time students get the stipend and duration adjusted pro-rata (e.g. 50% FTE = 50% stipend for up to 8 years).

Not stated on the UELA page — do not assume:

  • Visa fees, Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), relocation costs, or English-test fees are not listed as covered by UELA. International offer-holders should budget for the Student visa + IHS separately (see “If you are an international applicant” below).
  • UELA does not state a fixed RTSG amount, a travel allowance, or a laptop/equipment budget. Do not copy figures from other schemes.

Who can apply

UCL states two academic conditions, and one fee-status condition:

  1. You must fulfil the academic entry requirements for UCL.
  2. You must fulfil any additional academic entry requirements of the department hosting your project.
  3. You must be classed as Home or International fee status under UKRI/EPSRC rules. UCL Admissions formally assesses fee status for successful candidates — the summary on the UELA page is guidance only, not a fee-status decision.

Do not invent a degree threshold. The UELA page does not state a “2:1” or GPA cut-off. Some secondary sites quote a 2:1 or equivalent — that is not on the UELA page and must not be presented as the UELA rule. Check the hosting department’s own entry requirements for the project you choose.

Other eligibility notes from UCL:

  • Open to prospective students only.
  • Selection is on academic merit.
  • Some projects are “collaborative” — jointly funded by an external partner and involving time on placement at the partner’s premises.
  • UELA may withdraw projects from the catalogue before or after the deadline where unavoidable. If your project is withdrawn, UCL says you will be informed as soon as possible.
  • UELA is the new name for the UCL EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) studentships. References to “DTP” on UCL pages mean the same scheme.

How to apply — step by step

Step 1 — Wait for the catalogue (from 26 October 2026). The project catalogue (around 100 projects, per secondary listings — the UELA page itself does not state a project count, so treat “around 100” as unverified until the catalogue is live) and the application portal are expected to open on 26 October 2026. Do not apply before then; applications are only accepted via the UELA online Application Portal.

Step 2 — Pick a project, not just a university. You apply for a specific project in the catalogue. Read the project description, check its department’s entry requirements, and note whether it is a collaborative project with a placement.

Step 3 — Prepare your answers before you start the portal. UCL publishes the application questions in advance so you can draft them. Word limits (from UCL’s page):

  • Q1 — Your motivation for doctoral research: max 300 words.
  • Q2 — Your suitability for doctoral research: max 300 words.
  • Q3 — Knowledge and skills: max 300 words.
  • Q4a — About the research (one of your past research projects, in detail): max 500 words.
  • Q4b — Outcomes of the research: max 500 words.
  • Q5 — Contextual information (optional, e.g. career breaks, caring responsibilities, disability, long-term health condition): max 200 words. Do not declare protected characteristics such as gender or ethnicity, and do not include personal details you would not want your future supervisor to read.

For Q4, choose the past project that best demonstrates your experience for the project you are applying for — not necessarily the most recent one. State whether you worked alone or in a team, what your own intellectual and practical contributions were, the aims/hypothesis, techniques used and why, challenges and how you handled them. For outcomes, describe results/conclusions and what they contribute — and do not include details that would identify you, such as a full publication citation (UCL’s own instruction).

Step 4 — Submit early, and get references in early. Deadline: 8 January 2027, noon UK time. UCL’s own advice: submit your application AND your references by 16 December 2026, because UCL is closed over Christmas and there will be no email support. A complete application with missing references at Christmas risks being stuck with no one to ask.

Step 5 — After applying: three stages.

  • Stage 1 — Shortlisting: identifying personal details are hidden from panels during initial review/shortlisting to reduce unconscious bias. Expected to finish end of January 2027.
  • Stage 2 — Interviews: shortlisted candidates are nominated for interview; interview invites expected early February 2027; stage expected to finish towards end of February 2027.
  • Stage 3 — Nomination to central panel and final selection: nominations go to a UELA Central Panel, which reviews anonymised nominations and ranks offers for Home and International students, ensuring the international cap is met. Offers expected around mid-March 2027.
  • Respond quickly to any correspondence during this period (UCL’s instruction).

Step 6 — If selected: the UCL admissions portal. An informal UELA offer is not the final step. You must then complete an application to study at UCL via the UCL admissions portal and receive a formal offer of study before you get a formal UELA funding offer letter. Prepare your official grade transcripts well in advance — they must meet UCL Admissions Office requirements.

If you are an international applicant (including from Pakistan)

  • You can apply, but only up to 15 international students can be recruited (30% cap). Expect very strong competition.
  • Fee difference: UCL provides an award to cover the Home/international fee difference where applicable.
  • Part-time study is not available to international students.
  • ATAS: Depending on nationality, you may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. You can apply with a UCL conditional offer of study. The certificate is valid for 6 months, so UCL expects you to apply as soon as you receive your conditional offer.
  • English: You may need to provide evidence of English-language proficiency as part of your UCL admissions application. Check UCL’s English-language requirements page for the level your department requires — UELA’s page does not state an IELTS/TOEFL score, so do not quote one as the UELA requirement.
  • Student visa: You will need a Student visa, which requires your ATAS certificate and an unconditional offer of study. Visas over 6 months require paying the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) at application time. Check the amount with the official UKVI fee calculator before you budget.

Do NOT confuse UELA with other UCL studentships

This is the most common error in secondary coverage of UCL PhDs, and it changes deadlines:

  • UELA (this article): ~50 studentships, 4-year funding, portal opens 26 Oct 2026, deadline 8 Jan 2027 noon UK, stipend £26,022 (2027/28).
  • UNRISK / NERC Centre for Doctoral Training (different scheme): individual projects (e.g. urban heat risk, extreme hail) with a different deadline reported as 13 January 2027 and different funding (reported as 3 years 9 months + £6,000 grant in secondary coverage). Those figures belong to UNRISK, NOT to UELA. Do not mix them into this article.
  • Other individual UCL projects (advertised on jobs boards or department pages) each have their own deadlines and funding. Always check the specific project’s own page.

If a source says “UCL PhD deadline 13 January 2027”, it is almost certainly describing a non-UELA project. For UELA, the deadline is 8 January 2027.

Application checklist

  • Project chosen from the UELA catalogue (live from 26 Oct 2026) — check it is still listed before you apply
  • Department’s academic entry requirements checked for that project
  • Q1–Q3 drafted within 300 words each; Q4a/Q4b within 500 words each; Q5 (optional) within 200 words
  • Past research project chosen for Q4, with your own contribution stated clearly
  • Referees asked early — references submitted by 16 Dec 2026 if possible
  • Application submitted via the UELA portal before 8 Jan 2027, noon UK time
  • Official grade transcripts ready for the UCL admissions portal
  • International applicants: ATAS, English evidence, Student visa + IHS budgeted for after a conditional/unconditional offer

FAQs

Is UCL UELA fully funded?

Yes, for 4 years: Home-rate fees (plus a fee-difference award for international students), the £26,022 estimated stipend for 2027/28, and a Research Training Support Grant. Visa, IHS, relocation and test fees are not listed as covered.

Can I apply from Pakistan?

Yes — international students, including from Pakistan, can apply. But only 15 international places are available, and part-time study is not open to international students.

When can I actually apply?

When the catalogue + portal open, expected 26 October 2026. Before that, you can only prepare your answers (Q1–Q5 above).

What if my project is withdrawn?

UCL says it may withdraw projects where unavoidable, and affected applicants will be informed as soon as possible. If that happens, contact the hosting department about other opportunities.

Can I appeal if I am not selected?

No appeal on academic assessment/judgement. You may raise a concern only if you believe the published process was not followed, by emailing epsrc.dtp@ucl.ac.uk with subject “UELA RECRUITMENT APPEAL”.
